Should internet poker be legal in the USA? I think so!

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

People in most places in the world can and do play online poker at the best online casinos, the one major exception is the United States. Make no mistake there are plenty of people in the US who play online poker, the problem is that it is illegal, sort of. The actual laws on online gaming are quite complicated and far from clear, the federal government has however to act as though online poker is illegal. This is a position that we believe needs to change.

The main reason that I think that online poker should be legal in the US is that there is such a huge number of people who want to play it. Even today while it is illegal there are lots of people who play poker online. In fact the government has to invest large amounts of money to enforce the laws that make it illegal. Every time that they try to stamp it out new sites pop up that allow people to play. It is clear that no matter how hard the government tries they are not going to be able to bring an end to online gambling so they would be far better off allowing it an regulating it.

Another reason that online poker should be legal is that it live poker is now legal in a majority of places. The reason that you can play live poker but not online is that live gambling is governed by the states and not by the federal government. Most states allow live poker to some extent. The federal government however are opposed to the idea of allowing people to gamble and they have therefore decided to try to limit it as far as possible.

One of the concerns that the government has about gambling is that it can be addictive. While this is certainly true the fact remains the government are more than willing to take advantage of gambling when it benefits them. The most obvious example of this is the lottery which is of course a form of gambling. Since the money that is generated from the lottery goes to the government they are more than happy to allow this. It therefore seems a bit ridiculous of the government to argue that online poker is a danger to society, it is certainly no more so than the lottery would be.

While there are a lot of people who think that online poker should be legal, probably the majority, the fact remains that it is very unlikely that it will happen any time soon. The government have made it very clear that they are going to dictate to people what they can and can’t do as far as they can. That being the case unless something pretty dramatic happens the chances of online poker becoming legal are not very good.
